Postnatal Massage

Providing precious – and specialist – ‘me-time’ during your fourth trimester

Our post-natal massage, movement and scar-work treatments are expertly designed to help and support women post-birth. Our sessions help new mums recover from pregnancy and birth, and help mums in the first year of motherhood as you start to return to your pre-pregnancy selves. All of our highly-experienced, friendly perinatal experts have specialist knowledge in this field of women’s perinatal health. Depending on the labour and birth you’ve experienced, we can starting treating new mums from as short as 24-hours post-labour.

What is postnatal massage?

Postnatal massage and movement therapy is specifically designed for new mums from after birth, to up to 12 months postpartum.

Massage, scar-work and movement treatments have been scientifically proven to bring relief from a wide-range of perinatal aches and pains, including improving milk supply, diastasis recti, c-section scar healing, alongside supporting new mums by providing a safe, confidential space, and allowing you some vital self-care time.

Whether you’ve had a vaginal or c-section birth, your labour was easy, or you had a different birth to the one you were hoping for, our experts are here to help you ease the physical. emotional and mental ups-and-downs that come with birthing, breastfeeding and nursing your baby – whether this is your first baby, or your fourth.

What are the benefits of seeing practitioner after birth/during my baby’s first year?

Our bespoke postnatal massage and scar-therapy treatments are designed to de-stress, reduce pain and improve sleep. No two births are the same, so no two postnatal massage and movement treatments are too. Postnatal treatment helps ease the postural stresses of caring for a new baby. It also supports the mum’s energy levels, by providing a space for relaxation, and is scientifically known to help aid sleep.

Treatments are geared towards supporting mums, by offering a caring – yet neutral – listening ear, allowing mums the opportunity to debrief the birthing process (should they wish to), and acknowledge how you feel postnatal, in a safe, confidential space.

Caring for a newborn is a big undertaking for your physical, emotional and mental health. Our treatments provide the opportunity to help look after yourself and overall wellbeing, and potentially help reduce some symptoms of the baby blues and mental health problems that naturally arise from fluctuating hormones in the first year after birth. Our safe treatments should be a vital part of your perinatal healthcare and physical health routine.

Alongside our postnatal treatments, we can also point you in the right direction with guidelines on exercise postnatal, improving body image post-pregnancy, and support and neutral advice on coping with birth trauma, postnatal depression and overall mental health – through either online resources, or through local NHS or independantly-verified support groups.

What sort of postnatal massage techniques are used?

Our degree-level Advanced Massage and Movement perinatal therapist, will use a variety of safe, highly-effective and gentle techniques to get you results. such as soft and deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, fascial release, scar-work fascial work, breath-work and acupressure points to target specific conditions and help improve energy, reduce stress, improve milk supply and help with the aches and pains that come post-labour and nursing a baby.

Our gentle yet effective methods help new mums alleviate their muscle tension, improve blood flow, and promote harmonious wellbeing, ultimately supporting overall health and wellbeing.

Do I need to be referred by a GP/healthcare visitor to receive treatment?

No, you don’t need to be referred by your GP or healthcare visitor to start receiving post-natal massage or scar-work treatment.

We also review a new postnatal visit on a case-by-case basis. It can also depend on the type of birth you had too.

If you are unsure if you’re ready to receive treatment, we recommended reaching out to us so you can have a call with one of our perinatal practitioner experts, who can then assess whether you are ready for treatment.

Recent scientific papers have shown that postpartum depression and cortisol levels were decreased in women who had been massaged during pregnancy.

The newborns of the massaged mothers also had lower cortisol levels than the newborns of the control mothers.

Supporting you and your family from birth to 12 months.

Our postnatal experts are here to support, help and guide you during your pregnancy and up to a year post-birth. We love helping women – and their partners – during this transformative time.

We listen to your needs, and create bespoke treatment to ensure you get the most of our session.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT

We are delighted to support new mums with our range of bespoke postnatal massage treatments. Each session will last for 60 minutes.

After filling out our Initial Consultation form prior to your first visit, you and your antenatal massage practitioner will discuss some points on the form in greater detail (there is no pressure to discuss certain aspects of your pregnancy or labour should you not feel comfortable doing so, however the more information we know, the better we can tailor your treatment).

Following the assessment, your antenatal expert will great a bespoke treatment plan, incorporating a range of safe and effective massage, myofascial and movement modalities and bodywork techniques to address your needs. Each postnatal session will leave you feeling more relaxed, de-stressed and empowered.

1. Listen

Your Advanced Postnatal massage practitioner will attentively listen to your goals, and enquire about any concerns, general health, birth story (should you want to tell), or ongoing medical treatments/medications. We want to ensure you that you will receive the best tailor-made treatment; allowing us to properly address any issues you’ve come with.

2. Assess

For those experiencing headaches/migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome or pelvic girdle pain, we will assess the joint and surrounding muscles, in order for your pregnancy practitioner to continue to fine-tune the hands-on section of the treatment you’ll receive. This will be done with your clothes on.

3. Treat

Only the area being massaged will be exposed, and you will feel safe and comfortable in series of fluffy towels covering your body.

Your perinatal massage and movement practitioner will tell you which clothes to keep on of take off (normally we recommend keeping pants on, but taking bra off so we can work your back with ease). They’ll then give you privacy by leaving the room so you can take your time getting on the treatment bench. We will recommend the best position to lie down on the bench. Bolstering and extra pillows will always been on hand to ensure that you are in a comfortable and safe position throughout treatment.

4. Reassessment & Aftercare

We will reassess your pain, discomfort and/or range-of-motion after each treatment, for those seeking pain-relief treatment.

Our post-natal massage and movement practitioners are experts providing support that many other practitioners may not give. After treatment, we can signpost you to additional healthcare professionals, should we feel you may need some new or further postnatal care. We are also trained to help with perinatal health conditions, such as diastasis recti, and can guide you to help with this condition.

Should we feel a block of treatment would be best to support you post-birth, then we will review and fine-tune treatment plans accordingly at each visit. Treatment is always bespoke to you and your needs.
